Stray Cat Film Center

In October 2018, I was fortunate enough to be one of the co-founders of Stray Cat Film Center, Kansas City’s only 501c non-profit microcinema! Outside of the wonderful experience of programming, the Stray Cat project has been my greatest source of learning and artistic growth. Through this little 48 seat cinema, I’ve developed incredibly useful technical skills (live sound, maintenance, audio/visual build-out) and a better understanding of community organizing. In 2027, Stray Cat Film Center will be celebrating ten years open and I couldn’t be more proud of what all of us volunteers have been able to accomplish! Below you’ll find some of my Stray Cat based projects, either videos I’ve made for the space or examples of some of the programming I’ve put together for our audience!

Commercials

Along with my other resposibilities, I’ve been Stray Cat internal commercial director since the beginning. Below are some of the craziest ads we’ve concocted for our merch! [Roles: Writer | Director | Editor]

The Nice Price! (2021-2024)

It might not be good, but it sure is cheap! Stray Cat’s original dollar movie night. Finding things that could be shown for little, to-no-cost was a wonderful exercise of my research muscles. THE NICE PRICE! was fueled by the lackluster, public domain video transfers floating around from the early DVD era. As many canonical classics of the pyschotronic era have now been lovingly restored, the series was retired so these new versions could get proper screenings of their own. Below are a some of my favorite trailers I cut for the screenings. [Role: Programmer]

16mm Showcase (2023-present)

My current project, 16mm Showcase, is a celebration of all the imperfections of small format, motion picture film projection! Once a month, patrons are invited to experience the grindhouse quality of a feature projected from ‘reel’ 16mm film! Past films have included sci-fi, horror, international, and golden Hollywood releases. In 2024, I was overjoyed to be projectionist on a two-day celebration of underground artist Kenneth Anger, in which we played nearly his entire filmmography on actual archival prints!
